Enter trailing stops. My question is with setting up a trailing stop on an option. A trailing stop order sets the stop price at a fixed amount below the market price with an attached “trailing” amount. As the price of an option rises, the stop price rises by the trail amount, but if the option price falls, the stop-loss price doesn’t change, and a market order is submitted when the stop price is hit.

How do trailing stops work? A trailing stop acts like a ratchet. As the stock price rises, the trailing stop price does too. For example, if we bought a stock for $5 per share and used a 25% stop, we would sell if it fell to $3.75. (100% minus our stop percentage, 25%, is 75%. So we multiply our buy price, $5, by 75%, and we get $3.75.)
